"Well, gentlemen—" Kate stretched her left hand out to slip the lid to the storage drum from Leonard's slightly numbed grip. "—now that we've gotten a peek at the goods, I'll just reseal the container while you all work on clearing the area of your departmental personnel. The good news is that the uppermost source of the…hazardous material that we just found still has its transportation and storage plug in place. I suspect the two beneath are in the same, dormant state." Lord only knew where Odom had stashed the fuses capable of arming those mines—if he had them. Not that Odom or his former squadmate Doug Corbin would need even one of the Army-issued detonators designed to slip into the center of each disk. Both men had served as combat engineers.

If anyone could rig an IED out of a M23 filled with VX, a demolitions expert could.

But detonation wasn't the only risk. "I suggest establishing a wide perimeter, regardless. We don't have an unobstructed view of the bottom seams, and these…items have been known to leak." Especially given their age.

As little as a single droplet of VX on the skin could kill a man as large as either of the two hulks flanking her and the patrol officer to her left, and in minutes.

She glanced up at the detective in charge of the scene. "While Leonard establishes the inner perimeter, I recommend you contact Pine Bluff Arsenal. They've got a Recovered Materials team that can be here within hours to retrieve the hazardous material. Given our previous career experience, Deputy Brice and I will be happy to accompany you to the driveway while you make that call and set up your command post. We'll answer any questions we can while we wait for the recovery team."

Knox tipped his head to let her know that neither euphemistic use of the term hazardous material had gone unnoticed, and that he agreed: the exact nature of the material that they'd found did not need to be spelled out beyond the detective's chain of command, let alone over open radio…less the press get hold of the information and cause a panic.

Knox followed up the terminology acknowledgment with the slight lift of his brows—and that motion told her the man also believed the time had come for her to offer up the subtle nod that he'd been standing by to receive. The one regarding the arrest of the blond hulk beside her.

Did she agree?

Not only did she agree, she gave him that nod.

Knox returned her tip with an understated one of his own as he retrieved his phone. "Sounds good. We'll head back to the drive and set up there. Len will stand up wind of the drum, but remain within observation distance until someone official shows up to take it away. But, Kate, I'd like you make the call to Pine Bluff. Like you said, you and Brice will understand the questions that'll come from the other end of the line better than me and, hopefully, have a few ready answers.
